1960 World Series Game 7
October 13, 1960

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Yankees in dramatic fashion at Forbes Field to win their 3rd Championship.  Bill Mazeroski became the 1st and only player in MLB history to hit a walk-off home run in a Game 7 of the World Series.

1990 NLCS Game 5
October 10, 1990

Facing elimination in Game 5 of the 1990 NLCS, the Pittsburgh Pirates turned to Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek to try and keep their season alive.  Drabek stymied the Cincinnati Reds for 8+ innings in a thrilling 3-2 win at Three Rivers Stadium.

Wildcard Game 2013
October 1, 2013 

Returning to the Postseason for the first time since 1992, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Wild Card game in front of a raucous crowd at PNC Park to advance to the NLDS.  Russell Martin became just the 2nd Pirates player with a multi-homerun playoff game, the first of which came off rattled Reds’ starting pitcher Johnny Cueto.

1991 NLCS Game 1
October 9, 1991

The Pittsburgh Pirates quest to get back to the World Series for the first time since 1979 began with a decisive victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the NLCS at Three Rivers Stadium.  Doug Drabek and Bob Walk combined to hold the Braves to 1 run on 5 hits, while Andy Van Slyke and Bobby Bonilla each contributed offensively with 2-hit games in the 5-1 victory.

1979 World Series Game 2
October 11, 1979

The Pittsburgh Pirates evened up the series against the Orioles, sending the series back to Pittsburgh tied at 1 game apiece.  The Bucs rallied with 2 outs in the 9th inning to score the go ahead run at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, and Kent Tekulve pitched a perfect bottom half to secure his 1st save of the series.

1979 World Series Game 5
October 14, 1979

Facing a 3-1 deficit in the World Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates staved off elimination by defeating the Orioles at Three Rivers Stadium to send the series back to Baltimore.  With starter Bruce Kison injured, pitchers Jim Rooker and Bert Blyleven limited the O’s to 1 run on 6 hits as the Pirates picked up their first and only win on home turf in the series.

1979 World Series Game 6
October 16, 1979

The Pittsburgh Pirates recorded the first shutout of the series, forcing a decisive Game 7 in Baltimore.  John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve scattered 7 hits over 9 innings and the Bucs offense got to the Orioles’ Jim Palmer late to propel the Pirates to victory.

The night John Candelaria no-hit the Dodgers. Lanny Frattare and Milo Hamilton on the call.


1971 World Series Game 3
October 12, 1971

With the Pirates down two games to none, the Series shifted to Three Rivers Stadium.  Steve Blass took the mound and fired a complete game victory, striking out eight.  Blass threw a three hitter as the only Baltimore run came on a Frank Robinson home run in the seventh.  The big Bucco blow was provided by Bob Robertson, who slammed a three-run home run in the seventh off Orioles starter Mike Cuellar.

1971 World Series Game 4
October 13, 1971

Another “first” in Pittsburgh history as this was the first ever night game in World Series history and it happened at Three River Stadium.  Baltimore took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off starter Luke Walker, who was pulled by manager Danny Murtaugh after pitching 2/3 of the inning. Pittsburgh countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half to narrow the gap.  The Pirates took the lead in the seventh and reliever Dave Giusti pitched the final two innings to pick up the save in relief of Bruce Kison, who settled things down and threw scoreless ball in his 6 1/3 innings.  Here’s another first:  Kison did set a World Series record, hitting three Orioles batters during his appearance.

1971 World Series Game 5
October 14, 1971

The Pirates won their third straight at home to take a 3-2 Series lead.  Manager Danny Murtaugh chose to start Nellie Briles, opting to save his two top starters, Steve Blass and Dock Ellis for Game 6 and a possible Game 7.   The gamble paid off as Briles tossed a two-hit shutout as the Pirates coasted to a 4-0 win to send the Series back to Baltimore.

1971 World Series Game 7
October 17, 1971

The defining moment for Steve Blass as outdueled Orioles ace Mike Cuellar for another complete game win, his second of the series, a 2-1 nail biter that saw the Pirates capture their fourth World Series Championship.  Roberto Clemente staked Blass to a 1-0 lead, clubbing a fourth inning solo home run.  Clemente was named the Series most valuable player.

After 60 years with the organization as a player and broadcaster, it’s Blass’ last broadcast on the last game of the 2019 season on The Fan.
