Archer Goes 7, Pirates Defeat Brewers 9-4

Pirates Send 11 Men To The Plate In 6-Run 3rd Inning

May 31, 2019 - 11:30 pm

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Pirates Starting Pitcher Chris Archer has not had the start to the season that he would have wanted and has struggled since he returned from the injured list in Arizona a couple weeks ago.

But, tonight Archer had a confidence building outing as he went 7 innings and gave up 4 runs, on a solo home run and a three run home run, 2 walks and struck out 7 while throwing 92 pitches with 62 for strikes.

"I tried to reiterate this, but I've been doing it for such a long time, even in the minors it hasn't all been glitz and glamour, there's eb and flow to a season, to a career and three or four starts is never going to get me down," said Archer. "I want to do better and be better and I'm relentless, I'm not going to stop until I get the results that I'm looking for."

Jacob Stallings got the start behind the plate tonight and talked about what was working tonight for Archer and how he bounced back after giving up the two home runs.

"He's got 4 really good pitches and I think he gets into trouble when he becomes a 2 pitch pitcher and he used his 4-seam, his 2-seam, changeup, curveball and slider tonight," said Stallings. "When he can do that he's so hard to hit. I thought the use of his changeup early in the game opened up for his slider late in the game and got some swings and misses as he got deeper."

On the offensive side, Shortstop Kevin Newman has done nothing but hit since getting back from his stint on the injured list and is starting to provide some really good defense behind his pitchers.  Newman was moved into leadoff spot on Thursday and tonight he continued to get on base and give a spark for the rest of the lineup especially when he got the 3rd inning started with a single and then brought home 2 after they batted around in the inning.

"It's a great inning when your hitting around like that and guys are just getting on, putting together good at-bats, they gave us a couple free passes and we were able to capitilize on it and that was the inning that got us the win tonight," said Newman "I'm just sticking to my approach and just trying to battle up there, play the game hard. That's really all I go up there and try to do and it seems to be working right now, so just going to stick with it and keep playing."

Manager Clint Hurdle weighed in on the energy the crowd brought to the park tonight and the ovation they gave Archer and Gregory Polanco after Polanco made the catch to end the top of the 7th.

"Our fans are passionate, we have good fans, they'll just let you know how they feel, that's fair," said Hurdle. "There's a lot about him (Archer) that I do know they appreciate, especially appreciated the outing tonight."

The Pirates are now 28-28 on the season and will look to get back aboove .500 and move closer to Milwaukee in the standings Saturday afternoon when they send Nick Kingham to the mound against Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers at PNC Park at 4:05 pm.
