PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) -  What’s with all these days off?

In years past it seemed like baseball teams rarely had an off day, but this season so far it seems the Pirates have a day or two off every week.

The Pirates had five days off in April and have already had two days this May.

2019 is the second season under the new scheduling format that was agreed to by the MLB and the players association.

The new format adds an additional weekend of play at the beginning of the season and gives each team and additional three to four extra days off throughout the season.

The 2019 season’s Opening Day was on March 28, the earliest in baseball history.

The new scheduling gives players more time off and also offers more rescheduling opportunities in the case of a rainout.

Opponents of the new schedule have complain about the many team that play in a colder climate having game time temperatures in the high 20s early in the season before the weather breaks.

Others say they already have 6 months off and that with all the starting and stopping a team that won two straight now has their momentum halted with a day off.

The days off for the Pirates won’t be so frequent starting Tuesday when they open up a two game series against the Texas Rangers. There next day off is not until May 20. They have four days off in June.

The current schedule agreement runs through 2021.
