PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Art Rooney II says not to read too much into holding off discussions of an extension for Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers president tells Cook and Joe and Tomlin sit down every year to talk about where they “are going with his contract and we typically have had those private conversations later in the year.”

Asked if it was his intention to extend Tomlin’s contract when they do sit down Rooney would only say, “It’s my intention to sit down with Mike and talk about the future like we do every year.”

Rooney also discussed offensive line coach Mike Munchak leaving the Steelers to take the same job in Denver. Rooney says they had conversations with Munchak and wanted him to come back but it was his decision to leave and be closer to be with his daughter and granddaughter.

“I don’t know how long he was thinking about (leaving) but obviously it was important to him that at some point he get back to being in the same city as his daughter and granddaughter,” said Rooney.

When asked why the Steelers let outside linebackers coach Joey Porter go Rooney said, “Coach (Tomlin) felt it was time to make a change there.”

Rooney also talked about the defense and said a combination of coordinator Keith Butler and Mike Tomlin make the play calls.

“Coach Tomlin came up as a defensive coach and I think that he can coach Butler work closely together on that and truth of the matter is, even though it wasn’t everything we would’ve hoped for, statistically we were one of the better defensives in the league this year,” said Rooney.

Asked who made the majority of calls on defense Rooney said, “They work together on it . . . Coach Butler makes most of the calls but certainly Mike is right there beside him the whole game.”
