Back To Business As Steelers Start Camp In Latrobe

PG Steelers Beat Writer Ray Fittipaldo talks about the team just wanting to get to work ahead of this season

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Steelers players and coaches arrived at St. Vincent's in Latrobe as Training Camp 2019 gets started.

Post Gazette Steelers Beat Writer Ray Fittipaldo joined Ron on the Cook and Joe Show Friday afternoon to discuss what has been just a business as usual atmosphere with the personalities of Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell with other teams.

"You don't have that specter of a holdout or somebody trying to work out a deal on the franchise tag," said Fittipaldo. "In addition to all the distractions that Antonio Brown of course caused, Now you also don't have to talk about the Le'Veon Bell situation. I thought all the leaders and if you noticed it was all veterans who talked yesterday...I think this is by design, I don't think they wanted any distractions to open camp and these guys just want to get on with their work, get on with the season. They know they got to put a lot of work in up here, but this is a team that has a business like approach to these next few weeks and I think they're going to be better for it."

The big news that came out of the team arriving at Latrobe Thursday was the announcement that the Steelers and Mike Tomlin agreed to a 1-year contract extension.

"Just like giving him this one year deal, I think its probably a little bit of a compromise," said Fittipaldo. "I don't think that Art Rooney wanted that handing over Mike's head all season because if things did go bad, you could see that situation, the pressure would be turned up on him."

Tomlin is starting to approach the longevity of Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher's tenures as Head Coach of the Steelers and how much longer is he looking to be a Head Coach.

"He seems like he's happy here, I think he's going into year 13 now," said Fittipaldo, "He's starting to approach that Bill Cowher, Chuck Noll territory. Bill was here for 15 years before he decided to get out of it, Chuck of course was here for 20. It certainly looks like Mike's going to be able to get at least as far as Bill unless things really go haywire in the next couple of years."

Usually, Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert receives a contract extension at the same time as Tomlin, but that was not the case this time around.

"That's a completely different situation because as you mentioned he's going to turn 63 right after the season ends," said Fittipaldo. "I don't know if there's any urgency to sign him to a deal. I think if Kevin wants to come back, I think Art will have him back and I don't necessarily know that has to take place during training camp the way they've handled that in the past."

Ray and Ron also take a look at some of the position battles that will be taking place at Training Camp at Wide Receiver, Defensive Back and does Chris Boswell regain his confidence to be the kicker on this team.
