WEXFORD, PA (93.7 The Fan) - He may no longer be with the Pirates but Neil Walker is still the “Pittsburgh Kid” and the Little League organization he grew up in is naming a field after him.

The Brad-Mar-Pine Baseball and Softball Association broke ground Sunday on “Neil Walker Field” in Wexford right next to the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church on Pleasant Hills Road.

Officials said “naming this field after one of our own will serve as inspiration to our children that hard work pays off and dreams can come true.”

Neil’s parents Tom and Carolyn Walker who were on hand for the dedication said it’s an honor for their family.

“I don’t care if it’s a Little League field or a major league field, it’s something of a legendary fashion that you get to participate and see when you drive by here that “Neil Walker Field” is part of this community, I think it’s very big.”

The older Walker also said his son views it as an incredible honor.

“He never thought anything like this would ever happen to him," said Walker. "To have the little league organization you started on develop a field when he’s 33-years-old and call it “Neil Walker Field”, that doesn’t happen to many guys, he’s really blessed.”

Neil Walker was obviously unable to attend the dedication; he is currently in Florida for Spring Training with his new team the Miami Marlins.

The field will not only host Brad-Mar-Pine games but will also be a place for less-fortunate children to experience baseball.

League president Tony Mengine tells the Fan the field should be completed by the end of the summer and the entire complex will be ready to go next spring.
