PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – After exciting win yesterday in the debut of their two newest players, the Pirates will look to stay hot tonight at home against St. Louis. The Pirates (57-53) came out on top over the Cardinals (56-54) after receiving a big hit from Adam Frazier in the bottom of the eighth inning, which would ultimately put the team ahead for good. The Bucs enter Saturday in third place of the National League Central Division, 7.0 games back of the first place Chicago Cubs and 4.0 games out of the second NL wild card spot.

On the mound tonight for the Pirates will be veteran right hander, Ivan Nova. In his 20 starts this season, Nova has gone 6-6 with a 4.33 earned run average. Nova was handed a no decision in his last outing, going 5.0+ allowing four runs, three earned, off of six hits and three walks while only striking out one in the Pirates 5-4 win over the New York Mets on July 27. He has faced the Cardinals four times in his career, going 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA.

Opposing Nova will be rookie left hander, Austin Gomber. Today will be Gombers second career start in the major leagues. In his 18 total outings, Gomber has gone 1-0 with a 3.22 ERA. Gomber was solid in his first and only career start at the major league level, allowing just two runs off of two hits and two walks while striking out six in 6.1 innings of work and earning the win in the Cardinals 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on July 24. Gomber made his MLB debut earlier this season against the Pirates, where he threw three shutout innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

Following their game against the Cardinals tonight, the Bucs will take on the Red Birds once more before heading to the west coast for a nine game road trip where they will play the Colorado Rockies, the San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Twins.
