July 14, 2018 - 11:53 am

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Winners of their last three games and five of their last six, the Pirates will look to stay hot in their last few games before the all-star break as they take on Milwaukee in a double header on Saturday, July 14.

Following a big first inning where the Pirates (45-49) jumped ahead with a three run lead, they would not look back as they knocked the Brewers (55-40) out of first place in the National League Central division with a 7-3 win.

On the mound for the Bucs in the first game of today’s double header will be veteran right hander, Ivan Nova. Nova has a record of 5-6 and with an ERA of 4.50 in 17 starts this season. In his last time out, Nova earned the win after pitching 5.2 innings where he allowed three earned runs off of eight hits while striking out five in the Pirates 6-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on July 9. In five career starts against the Brewers, Nova has a 2-2 record with a 3.19 ERA.

Opposing Nova will be Brewers opening day starter, Chase Anderson. In his 18 starts this season, Anderson has gone 6-6 with a 3.81 ERA. Coming into today, Anderson has only allowed three earned runs in his last four starts. In his last time out, Anderson was given a no decision after pitching 4.2 innings where he allowed one unearned run off of eight hits and two walks while striking out four in the Brewers 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins on July 9.

Back in the lineup for the Bucs will be catcher, Elias Diaz. Prior to Francisco Cervelli coming off of the disabled list on July 8, Diaz started 14 games in a row behind the plate which had not been done by a Pirates catcher since Russell Martin in 2014. In his 37 starts this season, Diaz is hitting .291 (39-134) with eight doubles, seven homeruns and 23 runs batted in.

After the first game comes to an end, the Bucs will take on the Brewers following a short 30 minute recess for both clubs to regroup. The pitching matchup for the second half of the double header will be Brent Suter (8-5) for the Brewers against Pirates rookie Clay Holmes (0-1). The Bucs will then play the Brew Crew just one more time before the first half of the season ends for the All Star break.
