PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Winners in seven of their last eight games the Pirates will look to enter the all star break on a high note as they attempt to complete a five game sweep over Milwaukee at PNC Park on Sunday July 15. The Pirates (47-49) won both games of their double header against the Brewers (55-42) after receiving solid starts from Ivan Nova and Clay Holmes and big games offensively from Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco who homered back to back in both victories.

The Pirates enter Sunday in fourth place of the National League Central division. They are 9.0 games behind the first place Chicago Cubs and are 5.5 games out of the second wild card spot. Their recent hot streak has moved them within 1.5 games of the third place St. Louis Cardinals who announced last evening that they had fired their manager, Mike Matheny.

On the mound for the Pirates this afternoon will be right hander, Joe Musgrove. Musgrove is 3-4 with a 3.77 earned run average in the eight starts that he has made this season. In his last outing, Musgrove was given his fourth loss of the year after allowing just two earned runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work while striking out nine in the Bucs 5-1 loss to the Washington Nationals  on July 10. Today will be the first time Musgrove pitches against the Brewers.

Opposing Musgrove will be veteran right hander, Jhoulys Chacin. In 20 starts this season, Chacin has gone 8-3 with a 3.78 ERA. Chacin earned his eighth win of the season in his last outing after going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs off of seven hits and three walks while striking out three in Milwaukee’s 8-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on July 10. Chacin has eight career starts against the Pirates where he has a record of 2-4 and an ERA of 4.30.

Following today’s game all 30 major league teams will go on a short hiatus of play due to the All Star break. The MLB All Star game will be played on July 17 at Nationals Park in Washington DC. The Pirates will be represented by closer, Felipe Vazquez who is 3-2 with a 3.05 ERA and 23 saves this season. Following the end of the break the Bucs will begin the second half of play in the Buckeye state on July 20 where they will take on the Cincinnati Reds in a three game series.
