PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Following a split in their two game series against Detroit, Pittsburgh is back in action on the diamond they are set to begin a three game series against San Diego tonight at PNC Park. The Pirates (33-40) are coming off of their second off day of the week. In their last contest, the Bucs came back from a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Tigers by a final of 8-7 thanks to a spectacular day at the plate from rookie outfielder Bryan Reynolds. The Padres (38-37) come to the steel city riding high after sweeping a three game series against Milwaukee.

On the mound tonight for the Pirates will be right hander Joe Musgrove. It has been a bit of a rough season for Musgrove, who after starting off hot has fallen upon hard times, entering today with a record of 4-7 with a 4.87 earned run average (ERA). Musgrove struggled in his most recent start, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and a pair of walks while striking out three batters in four innings of work against Atlanta on June 13. As a kid who was raised in the San Diego area, Musgrove has a solid history against his home town team, winning both of the time he started against the Padres and allowing just three earned runs in 13.1 collective innings of work (2.03 ERA).

Opposing Musgrove will be left hander Eric Lauer. In 14 starts this season Lauer has gone 5-6 with a 4.60 ERA. Last time out Lauer had one of his worst starts of the season, going just 2.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks. Lauer has three career starts against Pittsburgh were he is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA.

After tonight, the Bucs will take on the Padres twice more to wrap up this five game, seven day homestand. Then they well head over to the lone-star state where they will face the Houston Astros three times.
