Ed Carpenter will lead the field of 33-cars to the green flag for next Sunday's 102nd Indianapolis 500 Presented by Penn Grade Motor Oil.  Carpenter's 4-lap qualifying average of 229.618 mph in the No. 20 Fuzzy's Vodka Chevrolet edged the Team Penske Chevrolet trio of Simon Pagenaud (228.761), Will Power (228.607) and Josef Newgarden (228.405).  Carpenter's first lap of his qualifying run was 230.088 mph around the 2.5-mile oval Sunday afternoon.

"That first lap blew my mind," Carpenter said.  "I figured we could run a 229 mph based on last night.  So, I knew we had more left but I wasn't expecting a 230 mph, but the whole ECR team, especially the guys on my No. 20 car, they've put so much love into this car and it means everything to me to put us in a position like this."

"We gave it out best," Pagenaud said.  "It was an incredible run.  The No. 22 Menards team did a phenomenal job on that car yesterday and today.  Ed was just a little faster."

Sebastien Bourdais was the fastest Honda in fifth with a speed of 228.142 mph followed by Carpenter's two other drivers, Spencer Pigot in sixth (228.107) and Danica Patrick in seventh (228.090) in the No. 13 Go Daddy Chevrolet.

"I was able to chase the car with my cockpit adjustments and try and keep the speed in the car in the whole run," Patrick said.  "I'm happy with it, and looking forward to next Sunday."

Three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves qualified eighth in the No. 3 Pennzoil Chevrolet for Team Penske.  2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon rounded out the Fast 9 with a speed of 227.262 mph in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

"The PNC Bank car was good," Dixon said.  "We tried a couple of things today we hoped would pick up the speed, it didn't pan out."
