BRADENTON, FL (93.7 the Fan) – Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer, along with Pirates Charities and Good Sports donated $20,000 in baseball and softball equipment for Bayshore High School in Bradenton.

Archer got involved with Good Sports in 2012, while with the Rays, when his agent told him the non-profit wanted to partner with him and the righty pitcher said it was a “no brainer”.

Good Sports has provided over $43 million worth of equipment to more than 4,200 youth programs.

Now with the Bucs, Archer said he was glad Pirates Charities has helped him raise money both here and in Pittsburgh.  Archer says he gets as much out of the interaction as the students do.

“I think a lot of times when I go visit kids, I benefit more from their innocence, their youth and their curiosity than they benefit from me,” Archer said.  “It is cool that their eyes and ears open when you walk in with a jersey.  The interaction and letting them understand that I am human and helping them understand that they can achieve their goals.  That is my whole intention, there is nothing self-fulfilling about it.  I’m going there to give.  I’m not going there for anything other than that.”

Archer says he never had the opportunity to meet sports stars as a child and he enjoys interactions with kids.  The 30-year-old Archer said he really doesn’t even like talking sports in these meetings, but talking about their dreams and aspirations.

“A handshake, a high-five can go a long ways,” Archer said.  “And if that’s the ripple that I am going to make, I am going to make it impactful.”

“They are the future of our world and any positive influence I can have on their lives is very important to me.”
