PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Clint Hurdle is stepping away from managing/coaching, that’s according to Fan Pirates Insider Jason Mackey of the Post-Gazette.

Mackey said in a Tweet Wednesday morning that Hurdle confirmed to him in a text message he was stepping away from the on field portion of the game.

“I’ve decided to put the baseball pants in the closest,” Hurdle told Mackey via text. “Time to give back to my family.”

Hurdle did add that he had talked to some teams around the league about a front-office position.

Padres beat writer Kevin Acee reported Tuesday that Hurdle considered becoming the team’s hitting coach before he decided to retire.

The Pirates still owe Hurdle $6 million.
