Starting an 8th year as the Pirates manager, Clint Hurdle told the KDKA Radio Morning News less than two weeks before the start of the season, “Our every intention is to put a very good team on the field, is to win games, is to battle to win the division, is to play in the post-season, is to win a sixth World Series,” Clint Hurdle.  “Those are real goals.”

Hurdle says they have talented, young players without experience, plus a 30 club that is a solid core for them.  Hurdle pointed out David Freese, Ivan Nova, Francisco Cervelli, Jordy Mercer, George Kontos and Sean Rodriguez.

“We have a solid group in the starting rotation, Nova is the dean of that group.  All have want-to, all have how-to and they all have hunger.”

The only question with that rotation is if Joe Musgrove will be ready to go.  Musgrove made his first Spring appearance against the Yankees on Thursday giving up two runs and striking out five.

The complicated situation is in the bullpen, just one experienced reliever in George Kontos and a solidified closer, Felipe Rivero.  Beyond that, a lot of options.

"Brault can fill that long role left side, Glasnow can give us innings where they will be in play.  Two men we are going to need.”

Plus the great stuff of Michael Feliz, Josh Smoker, Kevin Siegrist, Kyle Crick, Edgar Santana, Jordan Milbrath, Novydas Neverauskas.

“There’s a lot of competition out there, I do think it can be a dynamic bullpen, but we are going to have to grow up,” Hurdle said.  “I think we have some men out there that can help them grow up.”

There may not be the recognizable names in the field like Andrew McCutchen, but Hurdle says he likes his everyday players.

“You have Cervelli, you got Bell, Harrison, Mercer, Moran.  Freeze and Rodriguez to come off the bench and maybe Frazier, when those three play you’re not taking a step aside, back or down.  We have a good team, we have to go out and play as a good team.”
