Is Adding Kela Enough?

It's a great start, but Pirates shouldn't be done

Keone Kela

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)- The Fan Morning Show sees nothing wrong with the Keone Kela acquistion for AA pitching prospect Taylor Hearn and a player-to-be-named later. In fact, Colin Dunlap and Jim Colony love it.

Kela is a 25 year-old controllable arm who's first free agent year is 2022. He instantly provides more stability to the back end of the bullpen and is a great compliment to Kyle Crick and Felipe Vazquez. The guys said that Clint Hurdle and his staff could even play matchups with Kela and Vazquez in the 8th and 9th innings. If, for example, there is a stretch of lefties coming up in the 8th inning while holding on to a slim lead, the Pirates could throw Vazquez (a lefty) in the 8th and save Kela (a righty) for the 9th.

Plus, these are the kinds of players the Pirates should be looking to add at this deadline. Guys that can be here to help you win for years to come, not just rental players that are brought in only for this Wild Card race. All the boxes are checked with Kela.

But, Colin Dunlap says it's not enough. He doesn't believe the Pirates will grab a Wild Card spot this season. He thinks they will be in it all the way but will ultimately come up a little short. Both Colin and Jim wonder about the pitching rotation depth and whether it will be strong enough to continue winning down the stretch this year.

As it stands currently, the team still needs more. It still has to jump three teams to get into the postseason and the guys wonder how well it will do over this next week or so without two of its hot bats in Corey Dickerson and Josh Bell in the lineup.

Do the Pirates have enough right now to get in or does more work need to be done before 4 pm Tuesday?
