PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) – Pirates centerfielder Jarrod Dyson said Tuesday he returned to play baseball this year to get paid and that he wants to be a leader by example on his new team.  The 35-year-old  was then asked about social injustice.  And here is what he said.

“We try our best.  Being African-American, I’m from Mississippi where I see a lot of racist stuff go on, but at the same time I have to live life.  I can’t go home every night worried about why they act like that.  Why someone wants to be racist towards me.”

“I have to tell my child how to go about his life the right way and not be racist towards nobody no matter how they are towards you.”

“We get tired of seeing it as a whole as African-Americans.  We do.  I don’t think it’s so much we can do.  It’s more so what the people who are being racist need to do, more than us.  We can march.  We can hold signs all day, but I can’t change you.  You are going to have to change you.”

“Whoever is going to be racist in the world they need to go home and look at themselves in the mirror and realize they aren’t in the world by themselves.”

“I don’t want to be in a world with just black people.  I want to be in a world with all races and I look at everyone the same.  I have good white friends and Latin friends that I consider brothers to me.”

“My friends are my friends.  My family is my family.  I love all.  I don’t hate no one.  I wish people would change themselves instead of waiting for us to push an agenda across to make them change.”

“You know if you are racist or not.  I don’t have to tell you that.  You wake up.  You know what’s on your mind.  You know how you view other people.  You know how you view yourself and your own kind.”

“I love all.”
