Pittsburgh (93.7 The Fan) - It's football in shorts, but Steelers linebacker Tyler Matakevich sees the ongoing organized team activities as his chance to take advantage of an opportunity he lost last season.

'Absolutely," said Matakevich when asked if he believes the inside linebacker position that opened with Ryan Shazier's injury is his to lose. "You just have to show up every day, come in ready to work and get better.  That's all you can focus on is yourself."

The Steelers signed free agent Jon Bostic, who started 14 games for the Colts in 2017, but Matakevich has lined up next to Vince Williams with the first team defense since the beginning of  OTAs last week.

"I've been counted out my whole life, Matakevich said after Tuesday's practice.  "That's why I have the chip on my shoulder.  That's why I am the way I am. My mentality is to come in and do whatever I can to help this team out.  I saw my role last year, and I'm just trying to increase it this year."

Matakevich was in line for an increased role after Shazier suffered his spinal injury in Cincinnati on December 4th.  However, he too was injured in that game, further damaging his left shoulder that he initially injured in October.

"Oh, man (it was) very frustrating.  These opportunities don't come around too often.  That's why when you get an opportunity  you have to make the best of it and run with it.  I was excited to get my opportunity (last year), but I knew I was just going to do it the best I could with one arm."

Matakevich underwent surgery following the season to repair his labrum and rotator cuff in the shoulder and his biceps.  He said he's completely healthy.

"I'm definitely excited right now."
