Former Pirates All-Star Dick Groat Gets His Own Day

Tuesday is Dick Groat Day in the City of Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - It's a special day for one of the best athletes in Western Pennsylvania history.

Pittsburgh City Council proclaimed Tuesday Dick Groat day.

The effort was led by Councilman Corey O'Connor. Groat says he was touched by the recognition.

“I’m flabbergasted. This is a tremendous honor for me to be honored by the city I have loved since I was just a kid,” said Groat. “I’ve been to a lot of cities. I’ve lived in a few cities, always couldn’t wait to get back to my hometown of Pittsburgh. I’m so flattered and impressed that you people would honor me in this manner.

The Swissvale native and five-time MLB All-Star played nine seasons with the Pirates as well as the NBA's Fort Wayne Pistons in 1952.

He was also named the National League MVP in 1960, the year the Pirates beat the New York Yankees in the World Series. Groat batted .290 during nine seasons with the Pirates. . He later played for the Cardinals, Phillies and Giants.

He's currently a part of the Pitt Mens Basketball Radio Network with Bill Hillgrove.
