Gaviria Wins Stage 1 Of 2018 Tour de France

Race Favorites Froome, Quintana Suffer Setbacks On Day 1

July 07, 2018 - 11:49 am

The 105th Tour de France began Saturday morning as 176 riders started in Noirmoutier-en-Lile and raced 201 Km to Fontenay-Le-Comte.

Two of the favorites to win the Tour this year each hit some road blocks on the course during Stage 1.  Nairo Quintana lost time when he suffered a mechanical issue and last year's champion Chris Froome was involved in an accident 5 Km from the finish and finished a minute back of the stage winner.

Race contenders Richie Porte and Adam Yates also lost significant time during Stage 1 as they got caught up in crashes and suffered mechanical issues.

Columbian sprinter Gaviria took home the Stage 1 victory in his Tour de France debut as he outlasted Peter Sagan in the final sprint to the finish.

Stage 2 of the Tour de France will be Sunday morning as the riders race 182.5 Km from Mouilleron-Saint-Germain to La Roche-Sur-Yon.  Coverage of Stage 2 begins at 7:30 am on NBC Sports Network.
