Huntington On Injuries To Major League Players, Top Prospect

Pirates GM Joins Greg Brown For His Weekly Radio Show To Discuss Injuries And Frustrating Week For Pirates

April 28, 2019 - 4:50 pm

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington joined Greg Brown for his weekly radio show on 93.7 The Fan and the Pirates Radio Network Sunday afternoon.

The conversation this week started by recapping a frustrating week for the Pirates after discussing a lot of positives last week with the team at the top of the NL Central and National League as a whole.

"Obvioslly, it's been a tough week, (after) we did the show a week ago sitting 12-6, cautiously optimistic, our starting pitching had been fantastic. We'd given up some leads late and we figured out a way to score enough runs to be a nice number of games above .500," said Huntington. "A week later, it's been a tough week (as) we've lost seven consecutive games, our starting pitching has continued to be good and arguably good enough. We've continued to scuffle some out of the pen and offensively we've struggled to put things together and failed to capitalize on the few opportunies we have had."

The main focus this week was on the number of injuries the Pirates have had and what that is doing to their depth in their system.

"We've fluctuated between 8 and 11 (players on the IL), we've had some important guys out," said Huntington. "Injuries aren't an excuse, but they are certainly a reason why clubs struggle."

With key players on the injured list, the veterans who were supposed to come off the bench have had to play more and young players that have been called up have held there own and don't look overmatched at the plate.

"Fortunately, Cabrera, Reynolds, Martin, Tucker, they've stepped up and done a nice job," said Huntington. "That's the name of the game, it's the next Pirate up."

Huntington also weighed in on what went in to placing Chris Archer on the IL and he mentioned that it may just be them trying to be proactive with all the off days they have coming up. And they will be able to bring Archer back if all goes well without needing someone to make a spot start after his time on the IL.

We also learned late in the Interview one of the Pirates Top Prospects, Oneil Cruz, suffered a fracture of his foot and is expected to miss "a decent length of time".

Huntington and Greg Brown also discussed the Buster Posey rule and how it is being implemented, how quickly a general manager gets on the phone to call someone up from AAA when there is an injury during a game and more on the amount of injuries the Pirates have suffered in the first month of the season and if he has seen anything like this since he has been around the game.
