Jameson Taillon Named Pirates Finalist For Roberto Clemente Award

"To A Lot Of People In The Game Even Being Nominated For The Clemente Award Is Somthing Guys Take Really Seriously."

September 04, 2018 - 3:08 pm

(PITTSBURGH -93.7 The Fan) - Pirates Starting Pitcher Jameson Taillon has been named the Pirates finalist for the 2018 Roberto Clemente Award.

"It's a prestigious award, obviously everyone talks about Cy Young Awards, Silver Sluggers and Gold Gloves," said Taillon.  "But, to a lot of people in the game even being nominated for the Clemente Award is something that guys take really seriously.  To be recognized for work off the field is something that guys take a little more pride in."

Taillon also realizes what it means to be nominated for the Clemente Award while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"It's 2018 and I venture to say the most popular Pirates jersey is a Clemente jersey," said Taillon.  "That was acutally one of the first thing's I noticed when I came up here was how important he (Clemente) was and still is for the city.  Obviously wearing the Pirates uniform I recognize the responsiblility that comes with it.  We see a quote from him (Clemente) every time we take the field when we are going out in the tunnel.  His presence is still felt all around Pirates City down in Spring Training."

Taillon also realizes what it means to go out in the community and be able to help somebody.

"Especially now having gone through what I went through last year I may not even know that I'm helping people," said Taillon.  "I feel like just fighting back from what I went through, pitching well and taking the ball every 5th day.  I feel like my responsibility is to kind of be a face for cancer survivors and people fighting cancer and going through it."

Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle says Jameson Taillon has grown as much off the field as he has on the field the past few seasons.

"This (Jameson) is a very respectful young man. Speaks well, listens well, good manners and raised in a family that you could tell there's honor and respect within the family structure," said Hurdle.  "His understanding now of his particular platform has increased with his time here.  Through the adversity he's had as well he understands he has a particular platform that not many have.  There's depth, a lot of thought, a lot of service mindedness to him and there is a lot of compassion, empathy in his character as well.  He's a wonderful choice to be involved and to have your name represent and tied to a Clemente Award is a high honor and he's very worthy."

Every year, each club nominates a player to be considered for The Roberto Clemente Award.  The award is given annually to recognize a player who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions.

Taillon is 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA and 146 strikeouts and 2 complete games in 2018.
