Bradenton, FL (93.7 The Fan) - Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle on Saturday tabbed Jameson Taillon to start the season opener March 28 in Cincinnati.  Hurdle said Trevor Williams will start the second game and Joe Musgrove the final game of  the 3-game series at Great American Ballpark.  Chris Archer is scheduled to start the home opener vs St. Louis on April 1.

So what went into Hurdle's thinking?

"Different seasons, different conversations, I believe Jamo's earned it across the board," Hurdle said.  "Trevor did some nice things. Archer's done it in the past. There is an important aspect of the opening day at home for me, as well.  We've put two men in play that we think will represent the club the best way we can to get out of the blocks clean and set up the first four games of the season."

"It's a big honor," Taillon said.  "I get to kick off the season for the boys, set the tone.  It’s something that every guy wants to have."

Outfielder Starling Marte and shortstop Erik Gonzalez were the latest position players to report to Pirate City on Saturday.   Everyone is to be in camp by Sunday with the first full-squad workout scheduled for Monday.
