PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Following his major league debut on Saturday, Pirates rookie outfielder, Jason Martin spoke to the media on Sunday morning where he reflected on a day that he says he will never forget.

Martin wasted no time getting his name in on the stat sheet in his first big league start, leading off the game with a single. A few pitches later, Martin stole second base just before he was hit home on a Josh Bell double for his first career run.

“I was able to get right down to business,” said Martin about being the first hitter in the Pirates lineup in his big league debut. “After getting that hit I was able to settle down. Not that I doubt that I cannot play at this level, it just made me feel a lot better for the rest of the game.”

With outfielder’s Gregory Polanco, Lonnie Chissenhall and Corey Dickerson all rehabbing to rejoin the big league club it is unclear as to how much time Martin will get to spend in the majors. Despite the uncertainty, Martin is focused on simply enjoying the moment.

“I am coming to the ballpark every day with an open mind,” said Martin. “Especially after yesterday, there have been just so many crazy things happening. I came here expecting to play so every game that I see my name in the lineup fills me with excitement.”

Martin continued saying, “From the start of start of spring training I’ve been focused on trying to control what I can control. I am just trying to stay within myself.”

Martin will make the trip with the Pirates to Chicago where they will face the Cubs in their home opener on Monday afternoon. The matchup will be Martin’s first home opener experience at the major league level. For Martin, getting to have his first road game in the majors at a place like Wrigley Field is something he will be very much looking forward to.

“It is going to be amazing,” said Martin. “A lot of the guys told me about how crazy the fans are and with it being their home opener it should be even more exciting.”
