Pittsburgh Penguins’ breakout rookie defenseman John Marino is rumored to have broken three bones in his face.

According to a source close to the player, Marino will require surgery to repair the injury.

The Penguins have not made an official statement regarding Marino’s injury.

Late in the third period of last night’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Marino took a Steven Stamkos slap shot to the face after deflecting off Zach Aston-Reese’s stick.

Penguins’ head coach Mike Sullivan said after the game that the team believes Marino is going to be okay.

After practice today, Sullivan said Marino was kept out of practice for precautionary reasons and is continuing to be evaluated.

Without an official word from the team, it is unknown how severe the injury is or how long Marino will be sidelined.

Bryan Rust was given a maintenance day and was absent from today’s practice in Sunrise, Fla.
