LAKELAND, FL (93.7 the Fan) – For shortstop Jordy Mercer, it’s been a rebirth of his career in Detroit as he plays against the Pirates for the first time on Saturday.

The 32 year-old Mercer played in only 117 games for the Pirates last season as it became clear they would like to go in a different direction when they gave Kevin Newman a number of late season starts.

Mercer said learning names has been difficult, but saying every day the “D” on his new team’s uniform is getting better looking.

Seven years with the Pirates, 821 games, 55 home runs, 277 RBI, as for seeing black and gold for the first time.

“Brings back a lot of memories, Pittsburgh was our family’s second home for a long time,” Mercer said.  “I probably spent more time there than our house in Oklahoma.  It brings back a lot of memories where we had some really good teams.  Brought the 20 losing seasons away, brought the playoffs back.  Those emotions run through your system.  This is where it all started.”

“I don’t think you realize it until you come somewhere else.  Jimmy Leyland & I were talking the other day and he was like, ‘man, you had some really good teams in ’13, ’14, ’15, you were just missing a couple of pieces’.  It makes you reflect back that if you would have just added maybe another piece here or there, who knows what could have happened.  We took the Cardinals to the game 5 of the NLDS, if we would have won that game, who knows how long we could have gone.”

Mercer is now reflective of where he has come, saying he spent his early days with the Tigers with players a decade younger than him.  He is still in contact with a number of guys from the recent glory days and is thankful to have had those opportunities.

“You got to experience those playoff games, not everybody gets to make it to the playoffs,” Mercer said.  “To experience that three years in a row is pretty special.”
