Lyles, Pirates Take On Diamondbacks In Game 3 Of Series

Pirates Look To Snap 3-Game Losing Skid Tonight At PNC Park

April 24, 2019 - 5:01 pm

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Pirates enter Wednesday night's game at PNC Park against the Arizona Diamondbacks on a 3-game losing skid.  After losing the first two games of this series 12-4 (Monday Night) and 2-1 (Tuesday Night), the Pirates will send Jordan Lyles to the mound against Merrill Kelly and the Diamondbacks in game 3 of this 4-game series.

Pirates Catcher Francisco Cervelli described the starting rotation as a Wolfpack and they are doing something right because they are ranked collectively and individually at the top of the league pitching rankings.

"They are connected, like minded and they all have differences in their characteristics," said Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle. "Because I think every night they get the ball, that guys the alpha male that night. They may not be when they get in the clubhouse, but that night on the mound there is no more competitive guy than Trevor Williams when he's on the mound, Joe Musgrove when he's on the mound and Jameson's the same way. They just all have different appearances, but I think inside, if we could take a real look inside and MRI their emotions and thier bravado, they are very alike."

Joe Musgrove (1.59), Trevor Williams (2.59) and Chris Archer (2.74) are all in the Top 10 for lowest ERA's amoung pitchers in the National League.  Trevor Williams has pitched the 7th most innings in the National League and Musgrove is 3rd in the National League for batting average against (.180).

The Pirates lead the National League in overall team pitching with the lowest ERA (2.97), fewest runs against (73), 2nd fewest home runs against (19), fewest walks allowed (57), lowest WHIP (1.11) and batting average against (.215).

The Pirates training staff and roster depth has been tested a lot during the first month of the season.

"We're equipped and ready to deal with whatever is presented with us," said Todd Tomcyzk. "The medical staff from the major leagues all the way down they're a very diligent group, they know how to connect with players, know how to connect with staff and to manage workloads and such. It's another day in the life and us as athletic trainers are looking forward to the challenge and the good things is most of these guys are on the mend and getting back."

Tomczyk gave updates on Starling Marte, Corey Dickerson, Bryan Reynolds, Lonnie Chisenhall, Erik Gonzalez, Nick Burdi, Edgar Santana, Chad Kuhl, Kevin Newman, Jose Osuna and Jacob Stallings.

The Pirates are in 2nd place with a record of 12-9 which has them a game and a half back of the St. Louis Cardinals (15-9) for 1st place.  The Chicago Cubs (11-10) are in 3rd place and 2 and a half games back, Milwaukee Brewers (13-13) in 4th place and 3 games back and the Cincinnati Reds (9-13) are in 5th place and 5 games back.
