"They start doing (expletive) when they’re out, when they’ve lost."

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Evgeni Malkin is accepting of his one-game suspension for swinging his stick at the head of Fleyers forward Michael Raffl.

But Malkin did not exactly show a sense of remorse when he met with the media Thursday.

“One game, probably, yeah it’s okay,” Malkin said. “I played dangerous and my stick went high. Again, my point, I didn’t touch his face. I touched his shoulder, I think. I think he dived.”

Malkin, who had returned in Philadelphia after missing time with an upper-body injury, seems to think that Raffl, who punched Malkin in the back of the neck, was targeting an injured area.

“This is my point, I talked to the League,” he said. “I missed five games because I had a problem with my upper body, my neck, and he hit me behind my neck. Of course I’m a little bit upset.

“We see the time. There’s four minutes left and we lead 3-0. We know how Philly is. They start doing (expletive) when they’re out, when they’ve lost. I understand it’s a tough game, but he plays dirty and the referee gives him nothing. I don’t understand that.”

While Malkin may have a case that Raffl’s punch went unpenalized, many consider him fortunate to only receive one game. A lesser caliber player might have received a harsher punishment. If he had connected more with the swing, he’d likely still be sitting out.

“It’s fine, I try to forget that,“ he said. “It’s bad luck for me, but it’s one game. It means money. But the team won yesterday and that’s good. I’m back tomorrow and we play back-to-back against good teams I’m excited to play.”
