PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - A good night of sleep in his own bed. A trip to a favorite pizza shop. Taking his son to a doctor’s appointment. Strolling into PNC Park.

Andrew McCutchen’s much anticipated return to Pittsburgh has offered him a little slice of familiarity. But when the Giants new right fielder steps out onto the field when the Pirates host the Giants at 7:05 p.m. Friday night, things will be different.

“It’s good to be back, McCutchen said Friday afternoon. “It still hasn’t really set in yet, being on the visitor side. It’s a little weird. It’s a little different, getting used to that clubhouse there.”

Why wouldn’t it be? For nine years, McCutchen strolled right by the visitor’s clubhouse and, along the way, became one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved athletes of all-time.

“I don’t think there’s any question that Pittsburgh holds a special place in his heart,” Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison said. “But for you to truly move on and be the best you can be, you have to focus on the present.”

The Pirates have planned a pair of video tributes for McCutchen, both when he comes to the plate and in the middle of the first inning.

“I’m sure it’s going to be awesome,” McCutchen said. “A lot of people are going to be there, showing their support. I’m going to just soak it all in as much as I possibly can, because it’s not going to last very long. I’m looking forward to it.”

McCutchen’s legacy is firmly cemented in Pittsburgh sports history. The face of the franchise during the end of two decades of losing is a distinction he will carry forever. But McCutchen does not often reflect on Pittsburgh. At least not yet.

“I don’t look as anything as a closed book, I just look at it as another chapter,” he said. “I haven’t really looked back on it. I have thought about it, but not to the depth of what I have accomplished.”
