PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates have placed centerfielder Starling Marte on the 10-day disabled listed with a right oblique strain and have called up outfielder Austin Meadows from Triple-A Indianapolis

Meadows will start in centerfield and bat 7th Friday night when the Pirates take on the Padres for the second of a four-game series.

The Pirates said in a release "Meadows was selected ninth overall (first round compensation) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft by the Pirates. He entered this season ranked by Baseball America as Pittsburgh’s second-best prospect and as the “Best Athlete” in the organization.“

Meadows said before Friday's game he got the news yesterday from Indians manager Brian Esposito.

“Late in the game yesterday I hit a double, probably could’ve got a triple on but I stayed at second and [Esposito] asked me why I didn’t go three and I was just like I can’t really give you an answer, not sure and [he said] well you can’t be doing that in the big leagues because that’s where you’re going to be going. He . . . broke it to me that way and it was just a surreal moment.”

Meadows was expected to be called up last year but battled injuries in 2017. He said it has been a rough road but is excited to finally get his first start.

“It was tough with two or three injuries last year and going through all that. For me it was just this offseason, I just took into account, put everything behind me and I was just ready to play some baseball,” said Meadows. “Being here now, it’s hard to take it but it’s an amazing moment.”

Meadows will wear uniform #17.

Marte’s trip to the DL is retroactive to May 16 so the earliest he could return is May 26.
