Musgrove, Pirates Take On Reds In Game 2 Of Series

Colin Moran Will Make His First Major League Appearance In Left Field Tonight

April 05, 2019 - 4:32 pm

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - After opening up the 4-game weekend series against the Reds Thursday night with a 2-0 victory behind a strong pitching performance from Jordan Lyles and the bullpen.  Joe Musgrove will look to continue the string of strong pitching performances when he takes the mound for his first start of the season for the Pirates against Sonny Gray for the Reds.

MUSGROVE ON THE MOUND

Musgrove made his first appearance of the season last Sunday in Cincinnati when he pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief of Trevor Williams in the Pirates 5-0 shutout victory over the Reds in Cincinnati.

"We feel really good about the 2 innings (he) pitched in Cincinnati," said Hurdle before the game on Thursday. "He attached hitters, he used his pitches, it was something that he's done before, but never done here in a Pirates uniform. Really looking forward to this start, first time on the mound, first time back at home and he is looking forward to it as well."

MORAN IN THE OUTFIELD

Colin Moran has not played in left field since 2017 in AAA in the Astros organization and how the idea of him playing left field came up before today.

"He just brought it up to me and asked if it was something I wanted to do," said Moran.  "I'll play anywhere that will get me in the lineup."

Hurdle said that he wants to find a way to get Moran's bat into the lineup early this season and what kind of confidence does that give him when he hear's that.

"Yeah, that feels good and I'm just going to try and go out there and reward him for that," said Moran.

CRICK TO IL, MARTIN UP

Relief Pitcher Kyle Crick was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday afternoon with right triceps tightness (retroactive to April 4).  Outfielder Jason Martin was added to the roster and will wear #51.

Martin was asked about what he thinks has prepared himself for this call-up to the major leagues and why he feels he was ready at this time.

"Just being able to take things in from the older guys and be able to just be sponge to all the experience that's around me and try to put it into my game," said Martin. "Just going out trying to play hard not knowing when my opportunity is going to come. The thing you want to do is be ready when it is there and I feel like I'm ready and just be able to prepare myself everyday for this moment."
