Pirates Open Up 3 Game Series Against Cardinals

May 25, 2018 - 4:36 pm

As the Pirates get set to open a 3 game series against the Cardinals Friday night, there is one Pirates player who is really looking forward to first pitch in Joe Musgrove.  Musgrove has been on the DL since the end of Spring Training with a right shoulder injury.

In Musgrove's last rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis May 18, he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings.  In his rehab start with Indy before that on May 12, Musgrove threw 5.2 innings of no-hit ball.

"I can't wait to watch him (Musgrove) pitch," said Hurdle before the game.  "He's a very focused, determined young man who has had to hit pause way longer than he's wanted to and has gone through it professionally."

Hurdle added the Musgrove is just eager to compete and help the Pirates win games.

Musgrove went 7-8 witha 4.77 ERA in 38 games with the World Champion Houston Astos last season.  He began the 2017 season in the starting rotation, but finished the season witha 1.44 ERA in 23 relief appearances.

Colin Moran came over from Houston with Joe Musgrove in the Gerrit Cole trade and talked about what type of pitcher we will see in Musgrove.

"I'm really excited (to see Musgrove pitch)," said Moran.  "He's a great guy, a bulldog and really great competitor and I love playing behind him."

On what to expect from Musgrove, Moran said he (Musgrove) pitches aggressive and attacks the zone.

Moran also weighs in on fellow rookie Austin Meadows and his first week in the big leagues and also the chance to face St. Louis pitcher Jordan Hicks in the box as he has the ability to hit 100+ consistently.  Listen to Moran's interview below:
