PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – With the start of the new NFL year, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been active in the free agent market, adding players who they believe will help the team improve for next season.

On Thursday afternoon, Pittsburgh announced the signing of defensive back Steven Nelson who spent the previous four seasons as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I’d like to give a special thanks to our owner, Art Rooney, head coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager, Kevin Colbert for giving me an opportunity and bringing me into this great organization,” said Nelson. “I’m fired up to play for Steelers nation. You guys have some good football here to look forward to.”

Nelson started all 16 games last season for Kansas City where he had career highs in tackles (68) and interceptions (4). After playing both as a nickelback and an outside corner during his first three seasons in the league, Nelson spent all of 2018 as an outside corner, which is where he is expected to play next year for the Steelers. For Nelson, the challenge of covering guys alone on the outside is something he is excited for.

“Being on the outside you’re going to get more targets,” said Nelson. “The ball is going to be coming your way.”

Nelson continued saying “That means more opportunities for me. I love that challenge.”

Last season, an area where the Steelers defense arguably struggled most was takeaways, finishing 28th in the league with only eight interceptions. Nelson says that while he was unaware of the Steelers inability to intercept passes a year ago, that this upcoming season will be different.

Over the past year, the Steelers have been in the headlines for some issues that took place not on the field but in the locker room. However, Nelson says he has zero concern about the culture of his new team.

“I know guys that have told me great things about this organization,” said Nelson. “It is very chill around here; guys just come to work and it’s like a family.”

Nelson’s deal is for three years for an amount that has yet to be disclosed.
