PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan)-  After spending three years (2004-06) as the quarterbacks coach of the Steelers and most recently the head coach at UMass for the past five seasons, Mark Whipple is returning to Pittsburgh.

Whipple will serve as Pitt's new offensive coordinator and as he told The Fan Morning Show Tuesday, he's pretty pumped about it.

"I can't sleep. I went up there (to Pitt headquarters) and it was just great. It got better every minute I was in the building," said Whipple.

Whipple explained why he took the job and why Pitt is right for him.

"I think [it's] the leadership from Pat Narduzzi. I got to know Heather Lyke a little bit when we were in the MAC, when I was at UMass. Just to see where the program is headed...I've known Pat a long time, when I was the head coach at Brown he was the defensive coordinator at Rhode Island and our paths crossed quite bit when I was in the NFL and the things he did at Michigan State."

"But basically, it was the things he's done at Pitt. I think it's a great fit. We love the city, city of champions. We had a great run when I was there. My kids went to school there, they're Pittsburgh guys all the way and I just thought it was a really great fit."

Whipple has a young quarterback in Kenny Pickett to mold at Pitt and he talked about the opportunity to work with him and the other quarterbacks on the roster.

"I played the position, I coached them my entire life. I've been around a lot of great ones, obviously the guy next door is a special one in Ben [Roethlisberger]. I learned a lot from him [and] a lot of guys. Tommy Maddox helped me, Charlie Batch, those guys over there. I think I can bring a lot to the table and I just think I know how they feel in that situation and the experience factor," said Whipple. "But the bottom line, no matter who it is, you've got to give kids confidence, you've got to give people confidence and I know I can bring that to the table."

Despite his experience with passing the ball, Whipple let us in on what the offense could look like next year.

"In this day and age with the rules, I think you can spread it out a little bit more but still the run is a huge factor," said Whipple. "That's what you've got to do in crunch time and third and shorts and fourth and shorts, you've got to develop some toughness. The way the game's played with the skill factor on the outside, you've got to mix and match, we want to be balanced. But when you can run the ball when you want to run the ball, then you've got a chance to win a lot of championships and that will still be our goal."
