Schmidt Petersen Motorsports James Hinchcliffe will not race in the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by Penn Grade Motor Oil after failing to qualify in the field of 33 on Saturday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Hinchcliffe's 4-lap average speed of 224.784-mph was just 0.014-mph slower than 33rd qualifier James Davison's 224.798-mph.

"It's devastating in every way possible," Hinchcliffe said.  "Indy is a cruel mistress sometimes.  The highest of highs and lowest of lows, but SPM worked their tails off to get these cars ready.  We have three cars in the show, unfortunately the fourth one didn't make it, but we win as a team and we lose as a team."

Pippa Mann also failed to qualify in the field of 33 with a 4-lap average of 224.360-mph in her Dale Coyne Racing Honda.

"It's the worse feeling in the world," Mann said.  "The team worked so hard.  Earlier in the day I really thought we were going to get it done."

Three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves was the fastest qualifier of the day with a 4-lap average of 228.919 mph in the No. 3 Pennzoil Team Penske Chevrolet.

"The Shell Pennzoil Chevy looks really strong," Castroneves said.  "I didn't make any adjustments.  It's amazing how the car became so sensitive by the last lap.  You don't want to do anything too aggressive."

Owner/Driver Ed Carpenter was the 2nd fastest qualifier at 228.692 in the No. 20 Fuzzy's Vodka Chevrolet.  Team Penske's Simon Pagenaud and Will Power were third and fourth.  Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the Top 5 in the Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser Sullivan Honda.

Carpenter's teammate Spencer Pigot was sixth followed by defending Verizon IndyCar Series Champion Josef Newgarden in seventh.  Scott Dixon was eighth fastest in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.  Danica Patrick was ninth fastest in the No. 13 Go Daddy Chevy, giving Carpenter three cars in the Fast 9.

The Fast 9 advance to Sunday's Fast Nine Shootout that determines the starting order for the first three rows as well as the pole position for next Sunday's Indy 500.
