PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - It was a big day for Pirates starter Jameson Taillon as he got the win at the home opener, tied a career high in strikeouts and then joined our Pirates Postgame Show hosted by Chris Mack and Jack Zduriencik.

Taillon told us despite racking up nine strikeouts, he wasn't necessarily pitching to strike batters out.

"I never honestly pitch for strikeouts unless I have two strikes.  They kind of just start happening when your stuff is good and you're moving the ball around properly."

As to how things seemed to click for him in just his first start of the season, Taillon credited his catcher Francisco Cervelli.

"Me and Cervi were working pretty well together.  I don' think I shook him off all day.  That helps when you and the catcher are on the same page after going over in-depth scouting reports and stuff."

Taillon had to pitch in less than ideal conditions for a pitcher who grew up playing the game in Texas but said he has learned some tricks over the years to deal with the cold.

"It was a little chilly, but I got to open my season last year at Fenway Park and it was just as cold.  So I've learned some tricks now over the years from opening seasons in Altoona, West Virginia and Indy, so I didn't let that cold get to me too bad."
