Erik Jones earned his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory after winning Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400.

Jones held off Martin Truex Jr. and AJ Allmendinger in the second overtime to win by .125 seconds despite a damaged Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

“We were laying back and dropping back and at one point we had to repair quite a bit of damage and went a lap down,” said Jones.  “I didn’t give up at that point, but thought, we’ve really got to do our best to salvage a solid day but as the race started winding down, we just kind of kept bumping up.”

It was not a good day for several drivers who were victims in two separate multi-car incidents.  There were 10-caution flags for 46-laps and only 18-cars finished the race classified as running.

Truex Jr was able to avoid those incidents as well and was happy to survive and bring home some valuable points.

“All in all, I think it was a good night and did all the things we needed to do,” said Truex.  “And just happy to get through here alive and finish.”.

Allmendinger was another one who was happy to finish as high as he did considering how rough a race it was.

“You know, it was little bit of survival, and there at the end it was just trying to make the right moves,” said Allmendinger.  “Tried to ride at the back early on, and still got wrecked and had a lot of damage on the left rear of the race car, so my guys did a good job to fix it good enough”.

Kasey Kahne finished fourth and Chris Buescher rounded out the top 5.

The next race is July 14, 2018 at Kentucky Speedway.
