Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman made his major league debut Thursday night and then joined The Starkey and Mueller Show to talk with Chris Mueller about what it's like fulfilling a lifelong dream and if he had any nerves.

"I was trying really hard not to think like that because I knew if I did, the moment would get pretty big.  I went out there and obviously I looked up and saw the stadium and saw the fans and everything but I really just tried to focus on every pitch and playing baseball.  I waited 'til after the fact to really think about what just happened.  The last thing I wanted to do was be star struck and make a mistake."

As for how he got to this point, Newman tells us about the work he put in to improve his game and be Major Leaguer ready.

"I'd say in the field, I'm probably most improved range-wise, just getting to ball and making plays.  That and probably my speed.  I work a lot on my speed in the offseason and first step quickness, and that's really shown this year in my ability to steal bases."

Newman was hitting .302 in 109 games at AAA with 30 doubles and 28 stolen bases.  In the field he has made just six errors at SS in 330 chances.

In terms of what he'll bring to the team, Newman says he'll do whatever is asked of him.

"I'm ready to do whatever needs to be done," Newman said.  "Whether that's last night coming off the bench as a defensive replacement, I was going to go and pinch-run there in the 8th if someone got on, just a multitude of roles which I embrace.  I'm excited for.  I'm just ready to help in any way I can."
