PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - Pirates starter Nick Kingham broke Major League Baseball records in his debut and then joined The Starkey and Mueller Show to discuss it.

EDITOR NOTE: After talking with the guys, it was revealed that Kingham would remain in the rotation with Steven Brault moving to the bullpen.

Manager Clint Hurdle had this to say about the move.

“We had two different plans drawn up and that was one of the plans we had drawn up.  We felt if he pitched competitively to his skill set, gave us a chance to win the game, we would like to give him the ball another time.  There’s no promises after that based on the three off days between the 7th and the 14th.  As we have to prioritize our rotation moving forward.  That’s a large volume of off-days within a week.  Nick’s outing absolutely added value to the decision to start him again.”

In his interview with Starkey and Mueller, Kingham talked about how long it took before he even realized he set a Major League record by retiring the first 20 batters he faced.

"I didn't really realize it until I was up in the clubhouse and my phone kept going off and I was getting notification from everybody, MLB, ESPN, everything.  So that's when I realized what I did."

As for the nerves he was feeling, Kingham admitted they were there, but they obviously didn't impact him.

"Just anxious max, just nerves.  I mean good nerves, just ready to get it going...I was nervous, but I got the first inning out of the way and I think as the game went deeper, that's when I started getting more, I guess, aware of what was going on [throwing a perfect game] , and then I was like, 'Ok, I know what's at hand, I know what's going on' then I started not to get nervous but I started really to think 'Wow, you're kind of doing this right now, so don't mess up!'"
