PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Buckle up! It's playoff time and before the Pittsburgh Penguins head to the Big Apple to play the Islanders on Wednesday night Penguins General Manager Jim Rutherford joined Cook and Joe.

And the guys first question was about facing this Islanders team on the road that might be a tough out

“They have had great goaltending all year and they have played extremely well,” Rutherford said. “They are well coached and well run so it will be like always…it will be a tough series.”

Rutherford points out that a change in the coaching philosophy they brought to the islanders with the hiring of Barry Trotz who won the Stanley Cup last year is a big reason for the team getting where they are. He also has been very impressed with the job hos coach Mike Sullivan has done.

“This might be his best coaching stint for the penguins this year,” Rutherford added. “We’ve dealt with a lot….I think this is his best coaching job.”

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of experts picking the pens to win the Stanley Cup this year but Rutherford says that doesn’t bother him one bit. He says his team still has the right mix to win it all.

So what has him feeling so confident heading into the first round?

“We are an explosive team that can score goals in bunches,” Rutherford said. “We have the same goalie that has won 2 Stanley Cups playing at the top of his game.’

We won’t have to wait long now as the puck will drop at 7:30pm on Wednesday night for Game 1.
