PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Penguins General Manager Jim Rutherford joined the Cook and Joe Show on Thursday as the team is ready to get back to work after the long All-Star break and Rutherford says he likes his team but he still is looking to do more.

That could include trading for a scoring winger  even if he would have to part with a first round draft pick.

“I wouldn’t say I’m more than willing to give up our first but it’s something I may get forced to do or have to consider in the right deal,” Rutherford said. “Based on where the team sits right now and how we feel so positive about this team and where we could go this year…it’s something that I might have to do,”

Rutherford likes the improvement of his team from last year and totally believes they are a Stanley Cup contending team,

“The biggest difference  from where we were a year ago is that we’re a team,” Rutherford added. “Last year we had a lot of good players…we ended up getting 100 points but couldn’t deal with the adversity in the first round because we never came together as a team for whatever reason.

That is what prompted Rutherford to make changes to the look of his team and he is happy with the results thus far

“What we set out to do in the summer was to change that…make some changes and bring in some new players and changed things around and it has worked,” Rutherford added. “This is a group of guys that like to play for each other and they play well together.”

Rutherford says they have all the pieces to be a contender including two healthy and rested goalies who haven’t had to carry much of the load because both have been productive.

“You need depth in goal,” Rutherford said. “When you’re going into the playoffs and if you have two healthy number one goalies that have not been overworked you have an advantage,”

Rutherford said that he made it known last off-season that he would be looking to move a goalie but the rumors of moving Tristian Jarry were not true. He said  it would have been something that had to overwhelm him to even consider it but he said those rumors will only heat up this off-season.

“Whatever the rumors were it doesn’t really matter because it’s worked out now. He is here and he has had a terrific season.” Rutherford told the guys. “There will be more rumors this off0sdeason again because we still have 3 goalies and Jarry will be in for a big pay day as Matt Murray will. That’s when it will get real interesting.”

Rutherford won’t commit to whether he can keep both goalies but admitted that it will be difficult.
