PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - The NHL, like every other sports league isn't playing right now because of the coronavirus.  Unlike some other leagues though, the impact of these missed games may hurt them in terms of the salary cap.

NHL Pierre McGuire joined The PM Team for his weekly interview which takes place every Monday at 4:02pm.

During his weekly check-in, Pierre was asked about the salary cap implications of potentially missing the remainder of the season and he said it will be "hugely" impacted.

"It's something people aren't paying enough attention to.  Yes, it's going to be a major problem.  The cap could drop anywhere from 25 to 40%.  That's significant."

Pierre said without mentioning the team, that one team he knows of could be in serious trouble.

"There's a team that has five players signed that if it dropped 35%, half their cap would be eaten up by 5 players.  I don't know how you ice a team that way."

Pierre added that "They're going to have to come up with some really creative ideas."

The good news on that front is that Pierre sees the relationship between the NHL and the NHLPA being stronger than ever.

"I've never seen them have better and more open lines of communication...and I think that's such a positive with only two years left on the current working agreement.  I think this is fantastic news.  This is the most hospitable I've seen between these two parties in my 30 years in the league."
