BRADENTON (93.7 The FAN) - There are certain achievements in life that you likely can only appreciate with experience.  To hear Derek Shelton say it, putting on the uniform as manager of a Major League Baseball team for the first time is one of those.

Following the first official workouts of spring training, Shelton shared his feelings of being manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"It was fun," Shelton said.  "It was cool.  Been waiting a long time to be out here."

Shelton even allowed himself a moment to appreciate the lifetime of work that it took to get to this point.

"It was cool.  I think it's a little bit emotional.  You spend a lot of time throughout your career, you wait for a day like this, and an organization like this.  It was a really special day."

When you hear Shelton talk, you know the concept of family is important to him, both as a team and his actual family and when asked about it, it was obvious that having his Dad here at spring training with him today was a special moment.

"It's cool.  I'm sure you'll see my Dad here a lot, he lives close and I think my Dad is probably more excited than I am.  It's really special.  He was a high school coach for 35 years and knows a lot about the game and I'm very fortunate because he has thoughts about how things should go and what they should do.  But it's cool to be able to share that.  Any time you can share experiences with your family, especially your father, it makes it kind of a cool bonding moment."

So will Shelton have to run things like the lineup by his Dad to get his thoughts?

"Ha, no, I hope not" Shelton joked.  "I can guarantee you he'll have thoughts.  Everyone has thoughts about that.  Just him being here was cool."
