PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - After losing their 7th straight series...The Pirates are below .500 and  the downward spiral many thought would happen  is happening now for the Pirates. You can include USA Today Baseball Writer Bob Nightengale on that list.

Nightingale was a guest on the Cook and Poni Show on Monday and he said this Pirates team got off to a hot start and were playing over their heads and they are playing poor now but he thinks this team is somewhere in the middle of the pack.

"They are playing right now just the way people thought they would," Nightengale said. "Nobody thought they were going to contend."

He went as far to say the Pirates are in a rebuild mode despite those who have denied that.

"Of course they are," Nightengale added. "You don't trade away one of the best 5 pitchers in the game right now if you are trying to contend."

He of course is referring to Gerrit Cole who he said teams would keep if they expected to compete...he understand the McCutchen trade more because he was at the end of a deal and they were not going to resign him.

Nightengale also talks about potential targets if any that might be out there if the Pirates want to try and move some of their players.
