PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - Pirates Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova has been on the Disabled List since May 28 (retro to May 25) with a right hand ring finger sprain and he took the next step to returning to the rotation Tuesday afternoon as he threw a sim game pregame at PNC Park.

"They wanted me to throw 1 inning, but I talked to Ray (Searage) and we ended up throwing two," said Nova. "I feel good and this is a good step forward."

When asked about what's next, Nova said they will wait until tomorrow to see how he feels and they will take it day by day.

Manager Clint Hurdle weighed in on Nova in his pregame comments and reiterated what Nova said and said he looked good and they will know more tomorrow.

Hurdle was asked if a rehab assignment could be in the near future for Nova.

"We actually think he's in a range where this was a good opportunity for him to get out, get fresh and face a couple hitters," said Hurdle.  And as of now a rehab assignment for Nova is not in the plans right now before he is able to return to the rotation.

Nova was asked the same question about needing to go on a rehab assignment and he also said that he doesn't believe so.
