PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pitt Panthers defense suffered a big blow today.

Coach Pat Narduzzi says Senior linebacker and co-Captain Quintin Wirginis suffered a non-contact injury on practice Tuesday and had season-ending surgery on Wednesday.

Wirginis lead the Panthers in tackles with 41, tackles for a loss with 7 and tied for forced fumble with two.

“Our entire team is certainly heartbroken for Quintin,” Narduzzi said in a statement. “He was having an absolutely outstanding senior season, on and off the field, and we are very sorry it ended prematurely due to injury. Our team is one big family and we will certainly rally around him. Knowing Quintin, I have no doubt he will remain a huge influence in our locker room. His leadership will remain as valuable as ever for our program.”

Pitt’s first test without Wirginis is this Saturday at Notre Dame. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. on 93.7 The Fan.
