PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Penguins have given defenseman Marcus Pettersson a five-year contract extension.

The deal, with an annual value of a little more than $4 million, starts at the beginning of next season and goes through the 2024-25 season.

“In just over a year, Marcus has had a significant impact on our defensive group,” said Pens General Manager Rutherford.  “He is young, reliable and smart, which is important in today’s game.  Marcus is part of our young core and it was important to get him signed long-term.”

Pittsburgh acquired the 23-year-old Pettersson in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks in 2018 for Daniel Sprong.

In 107 total games with the Penguins Pettersson has three goals and 31 assists.

This season he has 15 points one goal and 14 assists and is a plus 4.

Meanwhile Sprong has one goal and one assist this season and is a minus 2.

The Penguins are back in action this Friday when the Flyers come to PPG Paints Arena.
