Pirates Are Back Home After 7-4 West Coast Road Trip To Face The Rockies And Dodgers

May 21, 2019 - 5:02 pm

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - The Pittsburgh Pirates return to PNC Park to begin a 6-game homestand Tuesday after taking 3 of 4 from the Padres and finishing 7-4 on their West Coast road trip.

The Colorado Rockies are at PNC Park for 3-games to start this homestand  followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers who are in for 3 this weekend.

The Pirates are 24-20 and 2.5 games back in the NL Central and are currently in the 2nd Wild Card spot in the National League and are 1.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers and the top Wild Card spot.

RING THE BELL

Pirates 1B Josh Bell was named the NL Player of the Week for his performance last week as he batted .407 with 4 home runs, 10 RBI, .889 slugging percentage and an OBP of .484. For the 2019 season, Bell is now batting .333 with 14 doubles, 2 triples, 14 home runs, 44 RBI and an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.101.

"He's been a confident guy, there's a lot of other people that have lost confidence in him and I think he did a really good job of just not getting caught up in it," said Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle. "As I shared with him last year, the '18 season could be the most benificial for him in his career and he thought that was an interesting slant on it. Where are they attacking you, why are they attacking you here, what are they seeing and then he settled himself down, he sold out to some things late, he was on a mission this winter to come back and be a bigger presence in the box and a powerful, impactful hitter."

ARCHER NEEDS TO BE ON TARGET

Chris Archer's return from the injured list did not go as planned in Arizona as he had a wild first inning, settled down for the next two and couldn't make it out of the 4th inning, only pitching 3 and two-thirds while giving up 7 runs (6 earned), issuing 3 walks and striking out 3.

Archer is 1-3 with a 5.58 ERA in 6 games so far in 2019.  He has pitched 30 and two-thirds innings giving up 20 runs (19 earned), issued 16 walks and struck out 34.

In his career against the Rockies, Archer has a 2-0 record and an ERA of 3.27 in 11 innings pitched (Two Starts).  His first victory in a Pirates uniform came August 8, 2018 against the Rockies at Coors Field when he struck out 11 in 5 innings.

"If you watched the (last) game he retired 10 in a row at one stretch and had as good a changeup as he's had all year and had a very effective slider. The start wasn't good, the start complicated things," said Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle. "(He needs to be) Aggressive from pitch one, aggressive in the strike zone from pitch one.  He just needs to command his pitches and force the hitter's, the swings."
