Pirates-Brewers Continue Big Series Heading Into Break

Pirates Look To Continue Inching Closer In The Standings

July 13, 2018 - 4:48 pm

The Pirates opened up this big 5-game series before the All Star Break against the Brewers with a 6-3 victory in Game 1 Thursday night behind Jameson Taillon's 6 innings of 1 run baseball and 10 strikeouts.  Jordy Mercer led the offensive attack with 4 runs batted in which ties his career high.

Nick Kingham takes the mound tonight for the Pirates as he is coming in with a record of 3-4 and a 4.27 ERA against the Brewers' Junior Guerra who is 6-5 with a 2.79 ERA.

Probable pitching matchups for the rest of the series:

Saturday (DH): Game 1 - Chase Anderson (MIL) vs Ivan Nova (PIT), Game 2 - Brent Suter (MIL) vs Clay Holmes (PIT)

Sunday: Jhoulys Chacin (MIL) vs Joe Musgrove (PIT)

On Nick Kingham's first few outings in the major leagues, "I don't think I've had a pitcher go through the logistical challenges he's gone through to maintain stability and day's pitching before.  I've been very impressed with the way he's handled it professionally, mentally, physically he's gotten work."  Hurdle mentioned some advice that Taillon gave Kingham, "You're a major league pitcher, go pitch like a major leaguer whereever you go."

On how the bullpen will be used heading into the All Star Break with the doubleheader tomorrow, "We will probably stay away from Rodriguez tonight because he's already thrown back to back days and hasn't thrown three days in a row all season.  Everybody else is in play all weekend."  Trevor Williams could come into play Sunday if necessary since he won't have another start before the break.

Tonight is African American Celebration Night at the ballpark and the Pirates and Brewers will honor Negro League Baseball by wearing the uniforms of teams from their cities.  The Pirates will be wearing Pittsburgh Crawfords uniforms and Brewers will be wearing the uniforms of the Milwaukee Bears.
