Pirates Bullpen Roles Are Changing

Kontos No Longer The Eighth Inning Guy

May 15, 2018 - 4:46 pm

In the media's pregame chat with Clint Hurdle Tuesday afternoon before the Pirates open up a 2 game series with the Chicago White Sox we learned that how the bullpen will be used late in games is changing.

"We are going to change his (George Kontos') role," said Hurdle. "We are going to look for different opportunites (for Kontos).  He's done nothing, but get outs and pitch every inning he's been asked to pitch for how many years and this may be the first time he's faced some challenges with not getting outs and keeping people off the plate truthfully."

Hurdle mentioned that they don't see themselves naming an 8th inning guy right now.  Edgar Santana, Michael Feliz, Richard Rodriguez and Kyle Crick will all get looks in the 8th inning depending on what part of the opposing lineup is coming up to start the 8th inning.

"We are going to use the bullpen to get outs to get to Vazquez without annoiting anybody (an 8th inning guy)," said Hurdle.

Injury Update

Josh Harrison began his rehab assignment Monday night in Altoona.  Josh saw 19 pitches in 4 at bats and played 7 innings on defense and the pregame work went smooth.  Josh is down today and they are going to try and play him day to day, maybe 9 innings the next two rehab games.

Joe Musgrove is still on schedule to make his next rehab start this Friday May 18th.  He is schedule to pitch 6 (or more) and 100 pitches.
