PITTSBURGH (93.7 The FAN) - The Pirates needed to make room on their roster for Jordy Mercer as he came off the disabled list and announced that they desingated for assignment utilityman Sean Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was having the worst season of his career at the plate hitting just .167 with 5 home runs and 19 RBI in 66 games.  Making matters worse, the defensive specialist had recorded 6 errors on the season as well.

For his career, S-Rod was .226 hitter with 77 home runs and 289 RBI's over 11 seasons with the Angels, Rays, Braves and Pirates.

The Starkey and Mueller Show reacted to the news as it broke on their show and talked about the odd timing of the decision.

"They could have buried this in September call-ups" in just a matter of days, Chris Mueller pointed out.

Joe Starkey added that "he was a really valuable players" in years past, but just clearly wasn't the same player this year and struggled to contribute.  Starkey added it was a disservice to S-Rod that they kept trotting him out this year when it was obvious he was done.
